About UNHCR in Tunisia

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, works to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees all over the world. UNHCR’s purpose is to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge from war and persecution. UNHCR also protects stateless people.

What is the role of UNHCR in Tunisia?

UNHCR has been working in Tunisia since 1963. We provide protection services including all aspects of registration, documentation, refugee status determination and durable solutions to persons of concern.

In Tunisia, we currently focus our work on the following areas:

  • Ensuring that asylum-seekers can apply for and gain access to protection;
  • Supporting the access of refugees to health and education services, and ensuring that vulnerable refugees and asylum-seekers can meet their basic needs including through access to livelihood opportunities;
  • Advocating for the improvement of policies and services that affect the lives of refugees and asylum-seekers;

UNHCR can help you to:

  • Receive information on how to apply for asylum in Tunisia, the procedures, and what rights and duties you have as a refugee or asylum seeker in the country;
  • Receive and register your asylum application at UNHCR Offices and provide you with an asylum seeker card;
  • Assess your asylum application, provide you with a refugee card if you are recognized as refugee, and protect your rights as a refugee;
  • Support you to enroll in school if you are at school age;
  • Support you to have access to medical care and provide you with psychosocial support if needed;
  • Support you with vocational skills training, income-generating projects and livelihood opportunities if you are a refugee;
  • Facilitate your access to birth registration in Tunisia;
  • Assist you if you wish to voluntarily return to your home country and facilitate your voluntary repatriation as a refugee when security conditions allow.
  • Explore other durable solutions such as socio-economic inclusion and resettlement if you meet the criteria

There is no charge for any service provided by UNHCR, whether directly or through its partners.
Any person, including a UNHCR employee, or organization claiming to be able to help an asylum-seeker or a refugee to receive a UNHCR service for money or favors must be reported to UNHCR immediately!
